FAQ-Qatar Chapter Membership
Question: What is the eligibility criterion for membership in Qatar Chapter?
Answer: If you are a Corporate Member of the Institution of Engineers (
India ), you are eligible to become a member of Qatar Chapter. In addition to this,
graduate engineers resident in Qatar who are not Corporate Members can also become
members of the Qatar Chapter. They are called non-corporate graduate engineer members.
Question: Is the membership of Institution of Engineers ( India ) open
to non Indians as well?
Answer: Yes, very much. Like all other professional bodies, membership
in IEI is also open to all nationalities with equal rights and privileges.
Question: If I leave Qatar , will my membership in Qatar Chapter cease?
Answer: Yes. According to the byelaws of the Qatar Chapter, you must be
resident in Qatar to continue as a member. If you are a Life Member of Qatar Chapter,
when you leave Qatar , your status will be changed as ‘Left Qatar’. In case you
return to Qatar later, you could notify and reactivate your membership.
Question: Diploma holders in engineering can become members of the Institution
in India . Why not in Qatar ?
Answer: Diploma holders are not admitted as members of the Qatar Chapter.
IEI has two categories of membership – corporate and non corporate. Persons who
have passed minimum 12 th Standard Board Examination with Physics, Chemistry and
Mathematics with minimum average 45% marks in these three subjects and persons who
passed diploma in engineering are eligible for non corporate membership of IEI.
This non corporate membership is only for appearing AMIE examination and they remain
member of the Technician Chapter of IEI for examination purpose only. All overseas
Chapters, State and Local centres only manage the processing of membership and examination
process but they do not have technician chapter.
Question: If I am a Corporate Member already, I am automatically attached
to the local chapter. Why is it different in Qatar ? Why should I become a member
of Qatar Chapter?
Answer: Your Corporate Membership is valid throughout the world, within
or outside India . If you are within India , you are always attached to a local
chapter or state chapter, depending on your place of domicile. If you move to another
place, you will need to notify the change of address to IEI HQ. You will be then
attached automatically to the new local centre. If you move out of India , you will
need to notify the change of address to IEI Head Quarter in the same way. You will
then be attached to the Overseas Chapter if one exists. If none exists in the country
of domicile, you will remain attached to the Head Quarter. However, outside India
this attachment works with a slight modification. Since overseas chapters are not
financially supported by the Corporate Institution, the system of local chapter
membership has been evolved in countries like Qatar to finance the activities locally.
Question: If I become a member of Qatar Chapter, will I qualify to become
a Corporate Member of the Institution? Will I get membership automatically?
Answer: No. Membership of IEI is awarded subject to the candidate fulfilling
the eligibility criteria. One will have to submit an application form with supporting
documents, fees etc. However Qatar Chapter provides assistance in the application
process.
Question: If I become a member of Qatar Chapter, will I get any privileges
in India ?
Answer: No. Membership in Qatar Chapter brings certain privileges within
Qatar only however, a certificate from Qatar Chapter will provide a proof of continual
professional development.

Answer: Voting rights in general body meetings, invitations for seminars
and events, access to local membership database, attendance certificate for participating
in seminars (which is evidence of continual professional development), counseling
and guidance to acquire corporate membership, Professional Engineer certificate,
Chartered Engineer certificate, opportunity to publish technical articles in the
annual souvenir and web page, access to members-only resources in the web page,
opportunity to network with like minded engineering professionals from a cross section
of the industry, access to Qatar Chapter library and reading room etc.
Question: Is the Institution of Engineers ( India ) membership recognized
in Qatar ?
Answer: Recognition of membership of professional bodies between the two
countries depends on the bilateral agreement/mutual recognition between the professional
bodies of these countries. Professional Engineers Committee which grants practicing
engineer’s license in Qatar and the Society of Qatari Engineers have high regards
for the Institution of Engineers ( India ) and its system. A formal reciprocal arrangement
for recognizing each other’s memberships does not exist now. It is being worked
out.

unique about the Institution of Engineers ( India )?
Answer: Institution of Engineers ( India ) is a professional body like
many other professional bodies of the world such as API, ASME, IEEE, IEE, etc. It
is not an association of engineers. Its further uniqueness lies in the fact that
it is the professional body of fifteen branches of engineering and it is one of
the oldest professional bodies of the world. It represents India at the World Engineering
Congress, Engineers Mobility Forum and in all engineering matters for the interest
of engineering professionals of India . It has educational and continual refreshment
and development programs and facilities for engineers and non engineers which many
professional bodies do not have. Its membership carries value in recognition as
an engineer worldwide. This is a national representative body enjoying a status
second to none.
